Hanoi

Vietnam

Our last stop in Vietnam was the capital of Hanoi. We preferred Hanoi over Ho Chi Minh City because of its old-world style but are glad we went to both. We stayed on the outskirts of the Old Quarter but were still within walking distance of everything.

At the center of the Old Quarter is Hoan Kiem Lake, with Turtle Tower near the center of the lake and the red Huc Bridge leading to a temple. It was peaceful walking around the lake even though you’re surrounded by a busy city. It’s a very popular place for group aerobics, fishing, or just hanging out. Close to the lake, we saw a water puppet show and a bunch of great street performers. The nearby Beer Street is very entertaining – a crowded street where you sit on tiny chairs and drink, eat, and people watch.

One of the more famous sites is Hoa Lo Prison, better known as the Hanoi Hilton. It’s where American POWs were imprisoned during the Vietnam War, including the late John McCain.

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was the political center of the country for 13 centuries and for some reason had a Smurfs exhibit.

Train Street was a cool experience. It was actually a bit scary when the train passed through the very narrow residential street.

Ho Chi Minh, one of the most famous and influential political leaders of the 20th century, lies in state at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum despite wanting to be cremated and have his ashes buried all over Vietnam.

Some of the other sites we visited include St. Joseph’s Cathedral, the Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, and the night market.

The traffic was bad and it felt a bit more dangerous when crossing the narrow streets – no margin for error. I really wanted to try closing my eyes while crossing the street but didn’t have the cojones to do it.
