Dark Cave

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam

On our second day in Phong Nha, we rented a scooter and did a loop around the park visiting a couple of caves. Our first stop was Hang Toi Cave, also known as Dark Cave. It’s sort of an adventure park where you zipline to the entrance of the cave. If you’re a guy, be ready to get groped by the attendant when you reach the end of the zipline. I recommend going first because he probably won’t do it if nobody is there to laugh. Also, it’s not the safest zipline – be prepared to stop yourself at the end since the attendant won’t help. I guess I was technically too heavy for the zipline, but they didn’t care and just told me to write down that I was less than 90 kilograms when I registered. It’s a good thing I was wearing a helmet though cause I hit my head on the metal bar at the end.

After the zipline, you swim to the cave entrance. Following a short walk through some narrow passages in the cave, you enter the mudroom. It was more muddy water than what I thought would be actual mud that you could float on, but it was fun splashing around in the dark. Upon exiting the cave, we got to take an inflatable raft back to where we started on the zipline. We were with four other people and there were only three paddles, which made for an interesting trip back since we had to work as a team to keep the raft straight. We also enjoyed some other activities, such as swings and other ziplines that you could use to jump into the water. But we didn’t get to do everything, such as the obstacle course over the water, since we were already running late and couldn’t play there all day.
