Thien Mu Pagoda

Hue, Vietnam

Thien Mu Pagoda, or the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady, is regarded as the unofficial symbol of Hue. It’s set atop a hill overlooking the Perfume River. Its most iconic structure, Phuoc Duyen Tower, stands at 21 meters tall.

We were surprised to find out that there was a shrine for Thich Quang Duc, who was the Buddhist monk who burned himself in the streets of Saigon as an act of defiance against the South Vietnamese government. You’ll probably recognize the iconic photo of him sitting peacefully while engulfed in flames. He was from Thien Mu and the car that brought him to Saigon, which was is in the background of the photo, is on display there.
