War Remnants Museum

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

When you think of Vietnam, as an American, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the Vietnam War, or the American War as they call it there. In Ho Chi Minh City, we visited the War Remnants Museum, which is a sobering reminder of the horrors of war. The outside of the museum displays US military equipment such as tanks, helicopters, airplanes, and artillery weapons. The inside has several floors of exhibit rooms that become more graphic the higher up you go, such as the Agent Orange exhibit. In addition to the horrifying photos and videos, a few people with birth defects caused by Agent Orange played musical instruments outside of the exhibit.

It was weird being there, but throughout our travels in the country, we didn’t meet anyone that held any outward resentment towards us. The only resentment that we encountered was with one of our taxi drivers in Hue, which is located just south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), who supported us in the war and had no love for the communist government of North Vietnam who attacked his town and sent his family members to prison.
