Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Sitting atop the mountain of Doi Suthep, overlooking Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist sites. It is said to house a piece of bone from Buddha’s shoulder. It can be reached by a long and winding road or an hour-long hike from Wat Pha Lat. The hike is much harder and less scenic than the one to Wat Pha Lat so you can skip it if you don’t have the time or mobility. It can get really crowded there but the architecture and view of Chiang Mai make it well worth it. The cheapest way to get there and back, other than hiking, is to take a songthaew (shared taxi). But on the way back down, expect to wait a while for it to fill up with passengers.
