Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Ayutthaya, Thailand

The final temple on our Ayutthaya day trip was Wat Chaiwatthanaram. It’s said to have been built by one of the kings to honor his mother, but another theory is that it was to mark the king’s victory over Cambodia. Interestingly, it features an architectural style similar to the famous Angkor Wat in Cambodia. During the Burmese invasion, Wat Chaiwatthanaram seems to have been used as a fortress since the walls surrounding it were reinforced and canons were also found during excavations.

We wished we could have stayed longer in Ayutthaya, but we had to go back to Bangkok to visit a few more sites before calling it a day.
